Hello community and welcome to another week of Around the Grounds! The byes are now upon us, that means this week we’ll be missing players from Brisbane, Fremantle, St Kilda and Sydney. Next week will be a bit easier with just Geelong and Gold Coast missing, but Rounds 14 and 15 will be the tough ones, with 6 teams missing from each of those rounds. So now may be the time you look at setting up your team for both the short term of clearing through the byes with 18 on-field, but also long term and your push towards the end of the season. As usual, we’re going to review the best options across each line from last week, as well as hit the state leagues and then onto the trades. So let’s get to it.

10 | Dylan Williams | 8 | $ 334,800 | $ 4,900 | 36 | 67 | 73 | 0.3 | 5121.2 |
Not much needs to be said about Harry Sheezel at this point, we’ve seen him have a few “average” games like this, but he has consistently bounced back, so I would expect the same to happen here. Lewis Melican scored well in his 2023 debut, but the Swans are on the bye this week, so he’s not an option to consider this week. Brodie Kemp returned to the Blues and scored well but played his 3rd game which puts his price up to near $300K. Rory Atkins had a poor game, but at this point if you traded him in then he’s worth persisting with and hopefully that’s just a one off poor game for him. His BE is still only 44, so that is an achievable score for him. Josh Weddle still has a negative BE, so he’ll be making plenty of cash from here and Seamus Mitchell had some injury concerns, but sounds like he has continued training this week without any issues. Dylan Williams has a BE higher than his average, but prior to last week he had 4 scores in a row above 80, so I wouldn’t say he’s one you definitely have to move out this week. His BE is entirely achievable and with Port not having the bye until Round 15 he’ll be a handy guy to play through.

10 | Darcy Wilmot | 11 | $ 308,500 | $ 5,700 | 29 | 58.6 | BYE | 0.3 | 5261.2 |
Will Ashcroft didn’t score well against Adelaide and is on a BYE this week, so there are a lot moving him out. That’s an understandable move, though if you had other priorities, he’s not the worst guy to keep for a few more weeks as he has shown he can bounce back from a poor game. Finn Callaaghan is nearing his peak and like Dylan Williams, he’s on the Round 15 bye, so could be another rookie option who we decide to keep through the bye, though like with anything, you have to plan that based on who you can bring in this week (or any week across the byes). George Wardlaw had a down score compared to his debut but looks to have solid job security and so looks like a nice downgrade target this week. Bailey Humphrey got a big score boost thanks to kicking the sealer for the Sunswhile Oskar Baker has pushed his BE down to an achievable level this week. Darcy Wilmot is on a bye this week but looks like we’ve gotten the most we can out of him.
RUCKS
Name | Games Played | Price | Price Change | Round Points | Average | BE | PPM | $ per Point | |
1 | Esava Ratugolea | 11 | $ 352,200 | -$ 8,400 | 37 | 64 | 91 | 0.6 | 5503.1 |
2 | Samson Ryan | 10 | $ 344,500 | -$ 14,900 | 39 | 63 | 101 | 0.6 | 5468.3 |
3 | Nick Bryan | 1 | $ 200,000 | $ – | 41 | 41 | 38 | 0.7 | 4878 |
4 | Lachlan McAndrew | 2 | $ 123,900 | $ – | 23 | 38 | BYE | 0.5 | 3260.5 |
A bad score for Esava Ratugolea though he had an excuse due to being subbed out with a hamstring injury. That looks like it’ll keep him out for a few weeks at the very least, but given where his BE is and the time of year we’re at, he’s looking like a trade out target this week if you have him. Samson Ryan has obviously had his scores suffer since the return of Toby Nankervis, with Ryan’s attendences at ruck contests going from highs of 54 vs West Coast and 69 vs Geelong to season lows of 19 vs Essendon and 6 vs Port Adelaide last week. That’s obviously impacting his score and with Nankervis in the side it’s unrealistic to expect that to change at this point. Nick Bryan made his 2023 debut but his scoring wasn’t really worth his initial starting price and Lachlan McAndrew is on a bye this week, but as with Bryan, his scoring hasn’t been significant and his job security still looks shaky at this stage.

Eddie Ford is the big-ticket player on offer this week, putting out another great score and looks to be making some big cash in the short term thanks to his BE of -114. North is on the Round 15 bye, so he looks to be a terrific option to bring in given he’s shown he can score well and will be available for 3 straight weeks across the byes. Brent Daniels gave himself a short-term boost with his score of 109 and he’ll look to potentially push past $400K while that score is in his rolling average. Oscar Allen and Kade Chandler are just about done for the year for Supercoach purposes while Will Phillips has scored well since his return a fortnigte ago and should be another solid option through the byes if you still have him.

It’s no surprise to see Eddie Ford take over a quarter of all trades this week and he’s easily the best downgrade option this week. Kieran Briggs falls just outside the starting rookie scale at $254,400, but has posted scores of 100+ in both his games this year, and if you’re a Sean Darcy owner looking for a replacement, or a Esava Ratugolea or Samson Ryan owner, then Briggs is an obvious (and easy) swap. Jack Macrae has two advantages, one being under $600K, but also gaining FWD eligibility, while Jordan Dawson and Tom Stewart are both nice grabs for under $600K. Jordan Ridley has been a bit uneven this year, but since his return from concussion he’s had scores of 122 and 130, so he’s a nice risk to take at just $428K. Coming out is a combination of guys who have likely peaked price wise like Darcy Wilmot, Alwyn Davey, Jacob van Rooyen and Samson Ryan as well as players on byes like Will Ashcroft, or ones who didn’t play last week like Sam Simpson and Alex Cincotta.
And that’ll be that for this week. As usual you can whack your comments or questions in the feedback section below or hit me up on the Twitter machine @BarronVonCrow. See you all next week!
